When confronted with the statistics, the issue of human trafficking can be overwhelming, to say the least. Like the rest of Africa, with its extensive porous borders and authorities stretched to the limit to cope, South Africa has a human-trafficking problem. Although there's little actual data because police records don't even single out trafficking as a crime, South Africa is a source, transit point, and destination for human trafficking where there is a demand for child prostitutes by white tourists. The trade does well when a child's protective environment, school, family, and community collapses.
Surrounded by South Africa, in the tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho with the third highest HIVinfection rate in the world and where 29.8% are HIV positive, trafficking in women, boys, and girls is thriving for reasons of sexual exploitation, pornography, domestic servitude, forced labour, and other criminal activities.
We can ALL play a part in fighting injustice. It is the only way we can win.
